Betadine mouth and throat rinse solution contains povidone-iodine, a complex compound of polyvinyl pyrrolidone and iodine as an active principle. This complex is an iodophore, where polyvinyl pyrrolidone serves as a carrier of iodine and enables its solubility in water. In contact with the mucous membrane, iodine is slowly released from the complex and acts as an antiseptic, that is, a disinfectant against bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa and spores. Betadine solution also acts as a deodorant, removing the unpleasant smell from the mouth that can come from food, alcoholic beverages, tobacco, etc.
