Betadine solution for disinfecting and cleaning the skin as an active principle contains povidone-iodine, a complex compound of polyvinyl pyrrolidone and iodine. This complex is an iodophore, where polyvinyl pyrrolidone serves as an iodine transporter. In contact with the skin and mucous membranes, iodine is slowly released from the complex and exhibits a strong effect on bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa and spores. The action occurs immediately after application and lasts longer than other iodine preparations.
