It blooms from May to late autumn in the Mediterranean regions, where it beautifies yards with its large golden-yellow or orange flowers and wonderful fragrance. The medicinal properties of calendula were known in antiquity and in the Middle Ages, when it was used to treat wounds, injuries and all kinds of skin diseases. The most famous is calendula cream, which the ancients used to treat wounds and burns. Our grandmothers also made calendula tea, which they used to relax stomach cramps, as well as against cough, asthma and insomnia. Where does the healing power of calendula come from? Calendula is rich in flavonoids, carotenoids, saponin, polysaccharides and essential oils. It contains potassium, provitamin A, lycopene and organic acids.
