Betadine vagitories contain povidone-iodine as an active principle, a complex compound of polyvinyl pyrrolidone and iodine. This complex is an iodophore, where polyvinyl pyrrolidone serves as an iodine transporter. In contact with the mucous membrane, iodine is slowly released from the complex and exhibits strong antimicrobial and bactericidal (gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria), virucidal, fungicidal (Candida albicans) and protozoicidal (Trihomonas vaginalis) effects.
