Origin: USA, Manufacturer: Now Foods, USA L-Tryptophan is an essential amino acid; which means that it is not synthesized by the body and must be obtained from the diet. L-Tryptophan is critical for the production of serotonin and melatonin, which help support positive mood, healthy sleep and proper immune system function. Each batch of NOW® L-Tryptophan is tested for the presence of Peak E and microbial contamination.
What is L-Tryptophan? It is one of the 8 essential amino acids that the body cannot synthesize, which is why it must be taken in through food or through supplementation. It participates in metabolism as a building block of proteins, but also as an important amino acid precursor of serotonin and melatonin, important neurotransmitters.
Action After resorption, L-Tryptophan is converted in the body to 5-HTP (5-hydroxytryptophan), and then to serotonin, melatonin and vitamin B-6 (nicotinamide). Serotonin and melatonin are important neurotransmitters (transmitters of information between nerve cells) that play an important role in normalizing sleep, mood, pain control, intestinal peristalsis and many other functions in the body. The increased level of serotonin in the body reduces the need for carbohydrates, which is why tryptophan is excellent in the fight against obesity. Numerous studies have shown that taking tryptophan has positive effects:
- Against insomnia - improves the quality of sleep
- In milder forms of depression – improves mood by increasing serotonin
- Regulates body mass – suppresses the feeling of hunger and the desire for carbohydrates
L-Tryptophan is an amino acid that is required for the production of serotonin, melatonin and niacin.
Vitamin B3 (niacin) is a vitamin needed for proper growth in children and maintains a healthy amount of oxygen in adults.
Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that sends information to different parts of the brain, controls mood, sleep and numerous other functions.
Melatonin is a sleep hormone that helps the body maintain a proper circadian rhythm (sleep/wake). Serotonin is converted into melatonin in the brain. During the day, serotonin production is highest and melatonin production is lowest. When the amount of light decreases, the conversion of serotonin to melatonin is faster, increasing melatonin levels and preparing the body for deep sleep.

L-Tryptophan
MUST NOT be taken with antidepressants (MAOIs, SSRIs), clonazepam, lorazepam, phenobarbital, dextromethorphan, meperidine, tramadol…. because it can lead to
serotonin syndrome . This syndrome occurs when there is an excess of serotonin in the brain. Symptoms include excessive sweating, irritation, fever, sudden changes in blood pressure, confusion, agitation or mania, and irregular heartbeat.
